Join us for a rundown of some of the upcoming tactics games we’re most excited about.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns (PC: December 2, 2022)
Undeniably the most high-profile and highly anticipated release on our list, this tactical RPG from Firaxis Games isn’t simply “Marvel meets XCOM”. Hit percentages and permadeath have been sidelined, and a card-based system similar to Slay the Spire is the mechanic for character actions.
You’ll play as an original hero called “The Hunter” and fight alongside perennial favorites such as Iron Man, Captain America, Wolverine, and Spider-Man.
Other highlights include customizing your character and the team’s headquarters, upgrade crafting, and a pet hellhound (in keeping with the game’s supernatural flavor). There will also be a five-part comic miniseries tie-in.
Phantom Brigade (TBD)
If you like big, stompy mechs you’ll be interested in this one from the indie studio Brace Yourself Games. Billed as a “hybrid turn-based and real-time tactical RPG”, you’ll take control of a mech squad fighting to take back your homeland.
According to the Steam page, Phantom Brigade will feature a “cinematic spin on the turn-based genre”, a world map, base-building, a “rich customization system” offering equipment and cosmetic options, and of course – destructible environments.
It sounds like a tall order getting all these parts to come together in harmony, but if the devs can pull it off this one could be a real sleeper hit. Homicidal All-Stars (TBD)
Taking inspiration from the film The Running Man (itself loosely based on a Stephen King novel), Homicidal All-Stars will put you in the role of a contestant in an ultraviolent game show set in a dystopian near future, fighting to the death in a turn-based squad vs. squad urban obstacle course environment.
Beyond simple survival, your success will lead to greater fame, generating a bigger fanbase and sponsorships.

Lost Eidolons (October 13, 2022)
This is a Kickstarter-funded turn-based fantasy tactics game that’s drawing comparisons to Fire Emblem. It tells the story of a rebel commander named Eden who is seeking to overthrow a corrupt conquering ruler and restore the rightful ruler to his homeland.
Combat won’t always be between armies, as the Steam page promises castle sieges, monster fights, and boss battles. You’ll also be tasked with recruiting, equipping, and training troops, with 20 playable characters and 10 classes.
While some have reported the graphics to be a bit underwhelming (Editor’s note: some people have too high of standards), the gameplay is what’s most important, so we’ll see how this one stacks up when it releases in just a few days. Expect coverage VERY soon!
Cyber Knights: Flashpoint (Early 2023)
If Cyberpunk settings are your thing, this Kickstarter-funded tactical RPG deserves a look. You’ll control a mercenary squad in a dystopian (what else?) future the developers describe as “a world full of consequential story choices and significant character development around a rich core of classic and new mechanics”.
Using a gridless action point system featuring cover and overwatch, you’ll use combat, stealth, and hacking to accomplish your mission goals. On the strategic side, you’ll manage mission contracts, character development, and improvements to your safe house.
The Steam page states that inspiration for Cyber Knights came from pen & paper RPGs, so if a turn-based version of Cyberpunk 2077 sounds appealing, put this one on your 2023 watchlist.
Honorable Mentions
Blood Bowl 3 (2022)
Brutally funny American football set in the world of Warhammer Fantasy, with rules based on the latest version of the board game. Four new races have been added, along with additional customization options and “special game rules” related to the different fields. Game modes include a solo campaign, co-op, and an improved competitive mode with a ladder system.
Triangle Strategy (October 13, 2022)
A PC port of a 2022 Nintendo Switch exclusive from Square, this tactical JRPG has some interesting systems, such as your actions determining which characters will or won’t join your group, and your team having a vote on your story choices. Some felt that the game was too “talky” and console ports can be a bit hit-or-miss, but we’ll see how this is regarded by the PC crowd.
Tactics Ogre: Reborn (November 11, 2022)
If the title sounds familiar, it’s because this is a reboot of the 1995 console game Tactics Ogre, one of the entries in the long-running Ogre Battle franchise. It features story-based gameplay, with multiple paths and endings and “endless combinations of classes, equipment, skills, and magic”.
Jagged Alliance 3 (TBD)
Originally announced back in 2004, to say JA3 has had a tortured development path would be an understatement. This return to a classic turn-based tactics formula sees you managing a team of 40 mercenaries (along with their quirks and interpersonal conflicts) in an African setting.
Shardpunk: Verminfall (TBD 2022)
Billed as “XCOM meets Darkest Dungeon” by the developers, Shardpunk looks like a really interesting take on the tactics genre. You’ve “already lost” and now you and your motley crew are running from the horde of vermin hot on your trail. Great pixel art and a fantastic premise make this one worth keeping a close eye on!
