I was reading something at the start of the show so I was only half listening, but I heard “130 single women” and “worn out”. You okay there, Troy?

Lol, now I need to listen again… Troy is a playboy though.

I don’t think managing food in AoWP is going to be a big deal. It sounds like something you only have to deal with sporadically, and even then the number of colonies is going to be limited compared to AoW3 due to the sector system and distance constraints between colonies. A handy UI to manage it would of course be ideal but even lacking that I don’t think managing this is going to signify next to the amount of clicking you’re going to do for moving individual units anyway.
I think “What is” does have value. I don’t always take an interest in the games you bring up – you can’t expect that – but I’ve clicked on more than one occasion.
I have not voted in the current poll. My choice isn’t there, which is “I am utterly indifferent to Steam sales”.

I think the “What Is” section has a whole lot of value, but I’m not going to comment on it every time, Nate. Expecting people to do that is a bit unreasonable. Just stick with it and keep us informed. That’s what the WEX is all about, right?

eXplorminate 8 years ago

No doubt. I was curious what people thought, but thanks for the feedback.

about the “what is” section….i realy like it. looking forward to more of it.
it sometimes brings up very interesting stuff you never would have looked at, of course it often enough has something you may have no interest in.
from my point of view it’s not needed or important, but i just like the section a lot.
thanks for another great show.

I’m wondering what 4X (!) games where playing those 99 people in the 80’s. The genre has “officially” started with Civilization and MoO. The Civilization was released in 1991, the MoO – in 1993. 😉

Amber Twilla (@Amber_Twilla) 8 years ago

There are a lot of games from the 80’s some people consider 4X games, but they aren’t really. They’re more like proto-4X games with 3 of the X’s and very primitive mechanics. The 4X era really began with Civ1 and didn’t get its name until MoO1. Everything that came before was the primordial soup 4X evolved out of, but they would be unrecognizable as modern 4X games. They’re more like Risk or Axis and Allies.

I don’t see Ecumenopoli a further means of “playing tall”. A planet can’t have any mining, generator, or agricultural districts to be converted into an ecumenopolis, which means they’re going to need at least half a dozen agri worlds to support their population.
After planetary reconstruction the arcology districts don’t produce any basic resources, they generate amenities, trade value, alloys, consumer goods, and unity. That’s not what you need for a one-planet empire, that’s what you need to hold a galaxy-spanning “wide” empire together.

FYI that’s “Ecumenopolises”.

I do enjoy the “What Is” section, the only request I have is if you guys don’t mind saying the names of the games more often, such as once in the beginning and once when you are wrapping up the update for that game. Sometimes I lose focus and miss the names, and it would be nice not to have to rewind the podcast to catch it.
Other than that been enjoying the podcast, keep up the good work!

Congrats on year 5 guys! Enjoyable show as always.
I like the “What Is” section, even if it doesn’t always grab me.
@Boris, et al – yes, there were 4X games in the 80s. I played all of them I could get my hands on, mostly for my beloved C64 – Reach for the Stars and Imperium Glactum being particularly memorable. Then the Amiga came with its rich graphics and sound, and games like Warlords and Millenium ate giant amounts of my time (but hey, I was in high school, so I had time to burn).
I’m afraid the latest poll is a pass for me as well (I pay little or no attention to steam), but keep em coming. 🙂
